Allow Yourself to Begin

April 22, 2017

Happy weekend! This post isn’t like my others, but it’s one that I would really like you to read. I think everyone starting something new can relate to this.

I normally talk about fashion on here, but today I wanted to talk to you about something a little more personal to me. I haven’t been blogging very long, only a few months. In these few months, I have been able to connect with amazing girls doing the same thing that I am. I love blogging and the opportunity it gives me to share parts of my life with you all. However, as I’m blogging more and more and finding out more about it, I sometimes tend to think that my blog isn’t as good as some other girls or my pictures don’t look as professional as I would like them to look. I’m putting myself out there, and sometimes feel inferior to others. I’ll look at other girls that have been doing this whole blogging thing for wayyy longer than I have and I’ll think, “Wow, I wish I could have a blog like them. I don’t think my blog will ever be that successful.” Well with that attitude, no it won’t. You’re not going to start off being an expert at something that you’ve never done before, and that’s okay. It takes a lot of patience and hard work to be successful. Just because you’re not where you want to be right now doesn’t mean that you won’t ever get there.

As I was at the store the other day, I found a gorgeous magazine for bloggers in the checkout line. I opened it and the first thing I saw were these gorgeous flat lay images. My jaw literally dropped from how gorgeous they were. If you follow my Instagram and blog, you know that I love to put flat lays together. It’s a chance for me to be creative and make simple things look pretty. As soon as I saw these pictures, I immediately felt that they were so much better than mine. I’m not sure why I would compare mine to these pictures because these were taken by a professional, in a perfectly lighted studio to get the perfect look. I’m sure you have heard the saying “Comparison is the thief of joy.” That saying is unbelievably true. We need to stop comparing ourselves to others because in the end, we will always think something is better.

My mom always is there to encourage me about anything in life, and I will never forget when she told me that it’s okay to be a beginner, and that it’s okay to not be a pro right away. I am such a perfectionist, and I want everything to be just the way I want it to look right away. That’s not always how life works. With time, hard work, and experience, we will grow and get better in what we do. It’s okay if you don’t think your blog is as good or gets as many viewers as somebody else’s. When you’re first starting out, it’s not going to be perfect. A lot of work goes into blogging and sometimes it might take a while to learn all of the tips and tricks to get your photos and blog looking the way you want them to look.

Three of the most important things to remember if you ever feel like this are:

  1. You are not going to know how to do everything right away.
  2. It’s okay to not be perfect.
  3. The more you practice and the more experience you have, the better you will become.

I hope this helped you if you were ever feeling discouraged about something you were passionate about doing. I know I’m not the only one, and I hope this made you realize that it’s okay to be a beginner. Everybody was at some point.

I hope you all have a wonderful Saturday!

Emily

I’ve had the exact same issue over the last few days! I look at other blogs with like 50-150 followers and feel inferior. Loved reading this and learning I’m not the only one feeling this way! <3

I love this! I was feeling incredibly inferior with my measly 2 blog followers, but if I’m reaching two people, I’m honored & humbled. Thank you for sharing this and for being so encouraging! 💕

I love this post. Such true words. It’s so easy to fall down the rabbit hole of comparison! The most important thing is just to be the best version of ourselves. Blogging and Instagram is a great creative outlet and I’ve learned so much. It can be discouraging when you are comparing followers and whatnot. What a beautiful, refreshing post!

This is so good. I feel this way every day when I look at others who have been doing this way longer than we have! We need to cut ourselves a break and know that one day, we will be there too. 🙂 Your blog is totally fab! Thanks for writing this. I’m sure I’m not the only one who needed it <3

To the girl that can’t let it go, I hear you. I To the girl that can’t let it go, I hear you. I wrote a new blog post just for you, up on prettyinplaids.com now. ❤️ Forgiveness is hard. It’s hard to move past things that hurt so deeply. I hope you will find peace in this post, because I understand how difficult letting go can be.

In other news, I’m feeling so pampered after meeting up with a friend to get a mani/pedi. I don’t do it often, but I just love getting my nails done. Having pretty nails makes me feel so confident. What have you done recently that makes you feel confident?
I was published in a national magazine! I have bee I was published in a national magazine! I have been keeping it a little secret from Instagram for a couple days, but one of my chalk paint projects was published in the June/July issue of @countrywomanmagazine! This is such an honor for me. I have dreamed of this moment and I still can’t believe it actually happened. I wrote a whole blog post that’s live now, so head to the link in my bio to read it! I am so grateful to have this space to share my ideas and designs, and to you all who support me along the way. You can find the magazine at places like Barnes and Noble, Target, Walmart, etc... all throughout the US and Canada. I can’t wait for you to read it! ❤️
One of my absolute favorite aspects of blogging ha One of my absolute favorite aspects of blogging has to be building relationships with brands that I have grown to love. @coppercure is one of my favorite shops for my love of copper and they were so generous to gift me with this pitcher. The quality is outstanding and it looks beautiful. I threw together a copper styling guide on the blog today and would love for you to check it out! The link is in my bio. ❤️
