Magnolia Home Chalk Paint Review + My First Painting Project

June 5, 2018

I finally had the chance to try out the Magnolia Home chalk paint! Ever since Joanna’s paint line hit Target stores, I had been wanting to do a project with it. I mentioned before that I have used the Magnolia interior paint for the walls in my bedroom and I absolutely love it. The chalk paint I used for this project was in the color “shiplap” which is a white shade. It’s a great paint for adding some farmhouse charm to your furniture. I’m also currently working on another project with Magnolia Home chalk paint in the color “blackboard” that I will be sharing later.

My mom and I actually garbage picked this vintage end table a few months ago. I knew that I wanted to update the look and painting it white did just that.

Before Paint:

Prep Work:

My favorite thing about chalk paint is that there isn’t a lot of prep work involved. I cleaned the surface of the table with a wet cloth to remove all of the dirt and dust and sanded lightly, but sanding prior to applying chalk paint isn’t necessary. This piece had some paint chips on it, and after sanding those off the spots kept bleeding through. I did have to use KILZ to remove those, but it’s not normally necessary with chalk paint. If it wasn’t for having to sand those spots off, I wouldn’t have needed it.

Chalk Paint:

This chalk paint was really easy to work with. Most projects take 2 coats of paint and the consistency was great. I can’t compare it to other chalk paint brands because I haven’t used them, but I can say that I would definitely use this chalk paint again for my projects. I didn’t think it was too thick or too thin, but one thing about chalk paint is that you can always thin it down with water. I didn’t need to do that, but it’s always an option.

Wax:

I did use the Magnolia sealing wax after painting. I put a thin layer over the whole table with a lint free cloth to help protect the surface. It was really easy to apply and the odor wasn’t too bad to deal with.

After Paint:

I love how it turned out! I can’t wait to use it. I may give it to my mom since I don’t have a ton of room for it, but I’m excited with how it turned out! This is my first project and I can’t wait to learn more as I go!

I can’t wait to share more improvements soon!
