Cottage Style Bookshelf Makeover

April 18, 2019

I recently refinished a beautiful cottage style shelf that my mom had custom made for her. It was stained green with wood bead board on the back. It was a beautiful piece, but the color didn’t match her style anymore and she no longer had a place for it. She ended up giving it to me and I knew that a fresh coat of paint would be the perfect way to update it. I had gone back and forth on how to paint it until I finally decided on a greige tone from Jolie Paint. Jolie sent me some beautiful paint to try and I absolutely love it! They sent me the color Swedish Grey, which is a beautiful creamy greige, along with a signature paint brush and some clear finishing wax.

Here is the Package that Jolie sent me:

Before:

Before

This is the piece before I painted it. Definitely not horrible, just needed a tiny update to give it a more cottage look. I love neutral paint colors, so Swedish Grey was perfect. I can’t tell you how much I love the color!

Process: One Coat

  • After One Coat of Paint
  • Good Coverage

The photos above are after one coat of paint. The coverage was great and I loved the color. The application process was very similar to other paints I have used, but I really loved the consistency of the Jolie Paint. Super easy to use and I just loved it. I think this is going to be the paint that I use mostly, I just love it that much!

Process: Painting the Bead board

I must mention, the bead board I painted white was not a Jolie Paint color. I wanted a contrast of the Swedish Grey and something lighter, so I used another paint that I had for the bead board. The colors look great together, but I wanted to point that out. Jolie does offer some amazing white paints though and I would love to try them out! This white is a chalk style paint by Magnolia Home in the color “Shiplap” which is a favorite of mine.

Process: Wax

Clear Finishing Wax

After I finished painting, I applied the Jolie Clear Finishing Wax with a lint free cloth. The wax was very easy to apply and didn’t take too long. Clear Wax doesn’t change the color of the paint at all and protects the paint from chipping. I can’t wait to try this Swedish Grey color with black wax as well!

After:

Here is the finished product. I absolutely love how it turned out! Jolie Paint is a great paint to use when refinishing furniture. The pigment and color of Swedish Grey is so rich and beautiful. This is my new favorite color for painting!

Side-by-Side:

Paint is a great way to turn something ugly into something beautiful. Thanks to Jolie Home for sending these amazing products! Happy Painting!
